She shut down her omnitool and addressed the three men in the room. “Let’s go, then.”

The four of them made their way through the slums, passing the same old dirt and grime that had been there since Shae left. The bloody patches on the walls were new, though, as were the half-terrified, half-grateful expressions on the faces of the residents. She saw a few old acquaintances; an old contact and an asari maiden who used to dance at Afterlife but had apparently quit due to an unexpected pregnancy. She smiled and waved at them both with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Could that have been me? she wondered. Or would I have died?

When they reached the vast hall of Environmental Control, she deferred to Ica. “Where are the fans from here?”

Ica moved to the front of the group and pointed a long digit directly in front of them. “Over there. The batarian I talked to said he heard clunking—probably something jammed in one of the rotors. Piece of equipment, most likely.”

“Or a corpse,” Hadys said, flanged voice making his somber observance that much more disturbing.

Shae avoided casting the turian a sideways glance and instead turned to Michael. “Weren’t planning on janitorial duty, were you?”
