Thank the Maker. He didn’t expect her to say that and for a moment, his heart dangled just above a bottomless pit. “I think we can do it.”
Shae finally finds her smile. “I think we can too.”
Thank the Maker. He didn’t expect her to say that and for a moment, his heart dangled just above a bottomless pit. “I think we can do it.”
Shae finally finds her smile. “I think we can too.”
The lieutenant goes quiet, his thoughts slowly processing. “..Do you want this, Shae?”
Her eyes soften, the tiniest of smiles pulling at her lips. “I want a family with you. This may be the only chance we get.”
The question takes him aback and he stands there, thinking of his next few words before blurting them out. “..we can support him, can’t we?”
“Or her,” she says, shrugging. “I don’t know. I’d have to take time off eventually, I guess, but we can save up.”
‘Depends.’ That is definitely not the word he wants to hear and his face drops only a little, hope still in his that huge heart of his. “D-Depends on what, baby?”
“Are we…" Are we gonna keep it sounds too brash, even for her. "Are we ready for something like this?”
It hasn’t hit him yet but it’s trying to, his breath short and his eyes wide. “..I’m going to be a fuckin’ father!” He runs a hand through his hair.
She nods, chewing on her lip. Shae desperately wants to be as ecstatic as James seems, but something gnaws at her. “That…depends.”
And his heart thumps harder for it, his brain swamped with questions and thoughts. “..And it’s mine? I mean— I did that?”
She blushes and smiles, his confusion is endearing. “Of course it’s yours, butthead."
I’m.. [He falls silent for a good moment, shocked.]
..a daddy?
She doesn’t really know what to say, so she just shrugs.
“Well, not yet. It’s still…sort of a bunch of cells right now.”
